Jazz Festival Basel
April 19 — May 17
Springtime in Basel is also Jazz Festival time! After an eight-month planning phase, Offbeat has put together a program that is full of surprises and new discoveries. This year’s edition will be a diverse, complex, and stylistically open musical firework consisting of jazz, funk, soul, and global music, with many female stars of jazz, in and around Basel. The festival is also breaking new ground, giving plenty of space to soul-jazz, funk, afro-jazz, and the Iberian music tradition, dedicating itself to the interface between classical/e-music and jazz, following the new trends and actively promoting generational change.
The main themes this year are “Vocals in Jazz,” “Piano Special,” “Italian Jazz,” “lberico,” “Classic & Jazz,” and the “Oriental Oud” in global jazz. Major orchestral projects in cooperation with the Jazzcampus, the Hout record label, and the Sinfonieorchester Basel are intended to inspire audiences as Swiss premieres, but new band projects from the current Basel jazz scene will also be duly presented in the Jazzcampus.
From April 19 to May 17, Jazz Festival Basel will present a varied program with many highlights, premieres, and big-name stars like Lizz Wright, Mario Biondi, Richard Galliano, Paolo Fresu, Stacey Kent, Michael Wollny, Stefano Bollani, Duquende, and many more. In all, there will be almost 30 concerts!
Check out the individual entries on the calendar for more information about each individual concert; Jazz Festival concerts are specially color-coded in purple. Get your tickets soon, since many concerts are already almost sold out!
