Major Tram Construction — Almost all Tram Lines Through the Old Town Will be Diverted

© bvb

The tracks in the area of the Theaterstrasse / Steinenberg intersection are one of the busiest sections of the entire BVB tram network. With around 1,450 tram passages every day, the track systems have reached the end of their service life and must be replaced.

The Steinenberg crossing will be completely closed to rail traffic to replace three crossings, eight switches, four switch controls, and 400 meters of tracks. The work will require an extensive diversion concept for almost all tram lines. From April 2 to 18, the stops at Barfüsserplatz, Marktplatz, and Theater will not be serviced at all; then, from April 19 to 28, only the section from Bankverein to the Steinenberg crossing will be impacted but tram lines will be rerouted around that.

Thus, for nearly the whole month of April, tram lines numbers 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 11, E11, 14, 15, 16 and 17 will be redirected, and for lines 10 and 14 some sections will be closed. So, give yourself enough time and plan accordingly. More details about the diversions are available on the large posters on site, or at https://www.bvb.ch/wp-content/bvb/dokumente/baustelleninformationen/2024/Steinenberg/BVB_Baustelle_Steinenberg_Factsheet.pdf.
