How does a 400 kg building block from a monumental Roman building end up under Freie Strasse? What do a handwashing vessel, leftover leather, and a mold reveal about life and crafts in medieval Basel? These and other spectacular finds dating back two millennia come from current and previous excavations and tell the story of the city center. They shed light on the creation and changes of the Marktplatz, its adjacent streets and alleys, and bear witness to a devastating fire in the neighborhood. They are being shown for the first time in this exhibition, which was created in cooperation with Archäologischen Bodenforschung Basel-Stadt (Archaeological Ground Research in Basel-Stadt).
