Are you ready to give up driving your car for 31 days in exchange for free public transportation? Then take part in the “31DAYS Basel” mobility challenge!

The first Mobility Challenge will take place in Basel between September and November 2025. Over a thousand participants will receive a free 31-day season ticket and can use the services of selected sharing providers—GA travelcard, bike subscription, and mobility car—free of charge. In return, they commit to not driving their private cars for a month.

Almost half the households in Basel own a car with a combustion engine. And in the canton of Basel-Stadt, the transport sector is currently responsible for 23% of CO2 emissions. Therefore, by giving up your car, you’re making a big contribution to climate protection! The challenge helps encourage more people to think about their mobility behavior and offers the opportunity to try out various sustainable forms of mobility in everyday life. This is intended to make it easier to switch from private cars to more environmentally friendly modes of transport. The Mobility Challenge contributes to achieving the climate protection target of “Net Zero by 2037” by reducing the use of private cars and increasing the population’s use of sustainable means of transport. This frees up space that can be used for safer and more continuous cycle lanes, green spaces, or boulevard restaurants, thus contributing to greater traffic safety and a pleasant atmosphere.

The Mobility Challenge has already taken place in Winterthur, Bern, and Belp and was met with great interest. In Winterthur, the challenge resulted in over 560 cars being parked for a month, saving an estimated 100 tons of CO2. In Bern, almost a third of participating households sold at least one private car during or after the challenge. The Basel Mobility Challenge is being monitored. Among other things, participants will be surveyed about their behavior and experiences during the challenge.
