Celebrate the Musical Heritage and Fascination for Jazz with “Jazz on Film”

The Stadtkino Basel is currently presenting a great music film festival in Basel—”Jazz on Film.”

They have made music history—Aretha Franklin, Maria Bethania, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Thelonious Monk, Chet Baker, Hiromi Uehara, and many more. The Stadtkino Basel celebrates their music, rhythms, and beats with legendary feature films, as well as iconic documentaries, biopics, and concert recordings filmed in clubs and studios, on large stages, and in intimate moments. The program is also a congratulations to 50 years of the offbeat Jazz Festival Basel. An invitation to celebrate the musical heritage and fascination for jazz!

In cooperation with the offbeat Jazz Festival, several of the film presentations will be introduced by jazz experts: Long-time Offbeat director Urs Blindenbacher will introduce the intimate portrait of trumpeter Chet Baker in “Let’s Get Lost,” the concert film “Amazing Grace” with the rousing Aretha Franklin, and the 1986 film ‘Round Midnight. The concert film about the legendary Newport Jazz Festival Jazz on a Summer’s Day will be introduced by former long-time music journalist and jazz expert Peter Bürli, who will also introduce Thelonious Monk’s “Straight, No Chaser.” Tony Palmer, director of perhaps the best film about Leonard Cohen, “Leonard Cohen: Bird on Wire,” will also be a guest. And fans of the Brazilian music should not miss the 1969 docu-film “Saravah,” which documents important Brazilian artists in Brazil’s politically and socially turbulent times under military dictatorship.

Jazz and music lovers should not miss these legendary films at the Stadtkino Basel! Check out the program at https://www.stadtkinobasel.ch/stadtkino/filmreihen/januar/jazz_on_film/607; viewings are taking place now through mid-February.
