The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is one of the world's most important dance companies. Since its founding in 1958 by the visionary choreographer Alvin Ailey, the company has stood for expressiveness, virtuosity, and a captivating fusion of modern dance, jazz, spirituals, and African American culture. Ailey's goal was to "bring dance back to the people," and his works continue to touch audiences worldwide. Ailey himself is considered one of the most influential choreographers of the 20th century. His experiences growing up in Texas, working with Lester Horton, and on Broadway shaped a distinctive choreographic style that made dance history. With the founding of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, he created an artistic home that focuses on diversity, empowerment, and profound human themes. His 1960 masterpiece, “Revelations,” remains the emotional heart of every Ailey season. The company will be presenting two programs at Theater 11 that are shown alternately. Both combine iconic classics with contemporary works and showcase the ensemble's full artistic range.
The program entitled “Alvin Legacy” is full of timeless energy and spiritual depth. The works include “Night Creature” (jazzy, playful, full of joie de vivre), “A Song for You” (an emotional homage to vulnerability and expressiveness), “Cry, Part 3” (a touching chapter from Ailey's famous solo for his mother), “Grace” (Ronald K. Brown's dynamic journey between spirituality and pulsating rhythms), and “Revelations” (Ailey's masterpiece about hope, pain, and redemption – a highlight of modern dance).
