The premiere of David Philip Hefti's three-part work for flute, bass clarinette, violin, and cello entitled “In Flowing Rooms,” with its shimmering overtone structures, lends this fourth program of Camerata Variabile’s seaon the translucent mirages of a fata morgana. Its illusions transport you from an enchanted French forest in Mel Bonis's work “Scènes de la fôret” to the deserts of Israel, the adopted home of the American-born Paul Schoenfield. “Mel Bonis” is the stage name of the French composer Mélanie Bonis, who chose it to escape the prejudices of her time against female musicians. Many of her compositions were published by major publishing houses, yet she received little international recognition. Today, the more than 300 works of this extraordinary musician are gaining increasing attention, and with their performance of her “Forest Scenes,” Camerata Variabile is contributing to her renaissance.
Finally, in Louis Spohr's Septet, you will encounter the long-vanished ideals of the 19th-century bourgeoisie. The composer, known today primarily for his violin compositions, was a superstar in his time, but—perhaps for the aforementioned reason—has fallen somewhat into obscurity. For an ensemble like the Camerata Variabile, this work is a key part of their core repertoire.
Tickets are CHF 45 for adults and free for youths and students.
