A song by the Basel a cappella group The Glue was the inspiration for the title of this concert: Building sandcastles is by no means the worst way to ruin a day at the beach. Anyone who builds sandcastles knows that their work will sooner or later fall prey to the sea—and watching this process of dissolution in the waves is part of the fun.
In this spirit, this program is dedicated to these magnificent structures and their counterpart: the entropy and infinity of the sea. They are encountered in the deep, tranquil sounds of the “Deep Space Dome” by Camerata Variabile’s bassist Stefan Preyer and seamlessly transition from these to the quiet, vibrant sounds of Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen’s String Quartet.
In contrast, works by Poul Ruders, Sebastian Fagerlund, and Svante Henryson are more upbeat. The composers who created the most fitting works for this theme are therefore almost all from Scandinavia. The music of the Danish master Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, two of whose pieces are included in the program, is strongly influenced by the world of visual arts and, despite its experimental aspects, always remains aware of its sensual quality.
The ensemble premiered a work by Kaspar Ewald many years ago, and they are delighted about another new collaboration, which allows them to build a bridge to The Glue.
Tickets are CHF 45 for adults and free for youths and students (CHF 5 at the box office).
