Collegium Musicum Basel — Freedom and Revolution

Two works by Ludwig van Beethoven are on the program of this concert with the Collegium Musicum Basel: an adaptation of his famous Violin Concerto for accordion and his ballet music about the god Prometheus.
Commissioned by an Italian ballet impresario, Beethoven composed the music for "Gli uomini di Prometeo" in 1800, a ballet about the rebellious Titan who brings fire to humankind. For Beethoven, who felt a strong connection to the values of the Enlightenment, this subject seemed tailor-made. Basel actor Matthias Schuppli will read a text by Peter Ustinov that humorously complements the myth.
Beethoven's only Violin Concerto was composed in 1806 within just a few weeks. The premiere was uneven, which is why Beethoven revised the solo part. With a playing time of approximately 40 minutes, the work is considered a milestone. On this evening, Swiss accordionist Viviane Chassot will perform it in a version specially arranged for her instrument.
Tickets are CHF 49-89.
