Collegium Musicum Basel — Silvia’s Echoes Ring Out

Stadtcasino Basel
Friday, 13 November
19:30

The Collegium Musicum Basel (CMB), conducted by Jan Schultsz, begins the evening with the overture from Joseph Haydn's opera about the sorceress Armida (1784). The opera's plot is based on a scene from Torquato Tasso's epic poem about the Crusaders, "La Gerusalemme Liberata." Flutist Silvia Careddu then performs two very different flute concertos by French composers together with the CMB: Concerto No. 7 by François Devienne, a classical composer who was himself a flutist, and the Concerto for Flute and String Orchestra by André Jolivet, who belongs to the avant-garde of the 20th century. Careddu, originally from Sardinia and an internationally renowned musician since her victory at the Concours de Genève in 2001, is currently First Flutist of the Orchestre National de France, a position she previously held with, among others, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin and the Vienna Philharmonic, as well as a professor at the Zürich University of the Arts. The evening culminates in a brilliant finale with Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 3 in F major, which was a resounding success at its premiere in Vienna in 1883.
Tickets are CHF 49-89 and CHF 20 for youths and students.
