Enchanté — Sous la Surface
As part of the Enchanté Singfestival Riehen, two choirs, a saxophone, a tape recorder, and an experimental approach to the “Messe pour double choeur” will bring a heartfelt appeal to humanity on this evening. Frank Martin's five-movement “Messe pour double choeur a cappella” (1922/26) is one of the most important choral works of the 20th century. The Swiss composer had kept his emotional work a secret for 40 years: It was his very personal prayer for peace. The trinational ensemble Choeur3 reinterprets the mass with the Alsatian saxophonist Philipp Koerper, the Ensemble Vocal Franz Stierli from western Switzerland, and with unusual tools: an analog tape and diary entries by the Jewish student Etty Hillesum (1914-1943) provide the backdrop. Forty voices fill the room and sing the overwhelming beauty of Martin's impressionistic tonal language. Saxophonist Koerper moves between the choirs with his instrument and the old tape recorder. The audience is invited to sing along in the “tableaux”, the sound surfaces between the individual movements, and to join in this musical appeal to humanity.
Tickets are CHF 20-60.
