With “Octandre,” Edgard Varèse wrote an epoch-making work for a large chamber music ensemble in 1923 and at the same time founded a new genre: Four woodwinds and three brass instruments are supplemented by a double bass to form an octet, with complete omission of keyboard instruments, percussion, and high strings.
In its “Trabant” (Satellite) competition for young musicians, the Ensemble Phoenix Basel has set the task of composing a new work in precisely this instrumentation that makes reference to “Octandre” and circles this work like a satellite. At the end of a workshop with the ensemble and Detlev Müller-Siemens as composition coach, the two prize-winners will present their new “Trabant” compositions together with “Octandre.”.
The work “Monolith” by the German composer Thomas Bruttger was commissioned by Ensemble Aventure (Freiburg i. Br.) in 1991 and completes the program.
Tickets are CHF 15-35, CHF 10 for holders of Colourkey, and free for kids under age 12.
