ESC Opening Ceremony

This year’s ESC Opening Ceremony will be a trailblazing approach to the official kick-off of Eurovision week. The traditional turquoise carpet is planned to be the longest in ESC history—over a kilometer long! In addition to the 37 delegations taking to the turquoise carpet, a celebratory parade consisting of at least 350 Fasnacht participants in full costume will head through the streets of Basel, starting at around 14:00, ending up at the Eurovision Village (Messeplatz) at around 16:00 for an afternoon of live music. The 1.2 km parade, which will run along the planned ESC Boulevard from the Marktplatz via the Fischmarkt, the Mittlere Brücke, Greifengasse, and Claraplatz to the Messeplatz, is intended to showcase Basel’s UNESCO World Heritage Fasnacht (carnival) in all its glory.
The event is free and open to everyone. Also to benefit from the expected tens of thousands of visitors, the shops will be open on Sunday, May 11, between 13:00-18:00.
