The Europäische Tage des Denkmals (European Days of Monuments, also called European Heritage Days) are part of an EU-wide initiative that since 1994 has been implemented under various names in many European countries. Held this year on September 13 and 14 in Switzerland, these days are designed to celebrate European heritage by giving everybody an opportunity to visit some of Europe’s beautiful historical monuments. This year's European Heritage Days have the motto "Heritage at Risk," reflecting the dangers of our cultural heritage from digitalization, climate change, population growth, and the consequences of increasing mobility.
This year's Heritage Day in Basel is themed “On Tour in Kleinbasel.” The program offers numerous guided tours on architectural culture and cultural history in Kleinbasel, as well as rides on historic trams. In addition, the Kleine Klingental at Unterer Rheinweg 26 will host an information stand, an opening event, a lunchtime concert with the Basel Chamber Orchestra and a Heritage Day finale with live jazz and a barbecue in the courtyard. For organizational reasons, registration is required for certain tours.
The program was compiled with several partner organizations, local experts, and knowledgeable specialists. All tours and events on Heritage Day in Basel—and in the rest of Switzerland—are free of charge. The detailed program will be published online at the beginning of September. However, the number of participants is limited for all guided tours and some other events; so be sure to register in advance online after September 4, directly in the program at the listing for the respective guided tour (https://www.basler-baukultur.ch/europaeischer-tag-des-denkmals-2026).
