Every other year in May, children’s and youth choirs from all over Europe, meet in Basel for the “Europäisches Jugendchor Festival.” Hundreds of singers sing and live in the region for these 5 days, and experts in choral music from all over the world gather to share their knowledge. This year’s 19 choirs, which are among the best children’s and youth choirs in Europe and have been chosen by a jury of experts long in advance, present their extraordinary skills to an international audience. The event is distinguished not only by the high level of performances, but also by the chance to meet other like-aged singers. Foreign music cultures, ancient chorales, groovy as well as contemporary music—the diversity is fascinating. Most choirs mainly perform music from their own cultural area.
Be sure not to miss this very special event. More than 20,000 people will attend the dozens of concerts that will take place in various locations around Basel-Stadt and Baselland. There will be many highlights to the festival, including street performances on Saturday starting at 11:00; several “sing-along” events, where the audience is encouraged to learn and join in fun choral songs from all over the world; as well as choir boat events throughout the day on Friday, on a boat departing from Schifflände.
