“Guggemusik” bands, consisting mainly of brass instruments and large drums, are not permitted at the Morgenstreich that is the official start of the Fasnacht (only the cliques with their piccolos and drums can participate at that time). As compensation, they get to take over the city center on Tuesday night. Organized Guggemusik groups meet at Messeplatz at 18:30 and then give concerts from 19:30–23:00 at Marktplatz and Barfüsserplatz. Gugge musicians who are not organized into groups meet at 20:00 at Claraplatz to play their deafening, discordant, but often very catchy tunes. All groups then disperse throughout the city center, playing their music into the small hours of the morning.
