Folk Concert — SOYUZ

Kuppel Basel
Thursday, 22 October
20:45

SOYUZ is a creative collective from Minsk, Belarus, founded by multi-instrumentalists Alex Chumak (the band's composer and principal arranger), and Mikita Arlou. After relocating to Warsaw, Poland, in 2022, they were joined by drummer Albert Karch and guitarist Igor Wiśniewski. The band's name translates to "union" and reflects the creative nature of the relationship between the members and their collaborators. While SOYUZ's recordings feature a wider range of instruments, their live performances are reinterpreted by the quartet, incorporating musical insights from all contributors and allowing ample room for collective improvisation. The new album, titled "KROK," released in 2025, was recorded in São Paulo, Stockholm, and Warsaw. As the project's first full-length album recorded entirely in Belarusian with interludes in Portuguese and Japanese, it underscores the band's ambition for further international collaborations and features songs with renowned musicians Tim Bernardes (Brazil) and Manami Kakudo (Japan). The genre of "KROK" defies easy categorization: it encompasses folk ballads and jazzy pop compositions, underpinned by lush and often dissonant string and woodwind arrangements. The album explores themes of movement and migration, embracing uncertainty and finding subtle moments of beauty in everyday life.
Tickets are CHF 23-28 (CHF 28-32 at the door).
