Freunde Alter Musik Basel — Beauty for Four Voices

Philippe Verdelot is considered one of the most important composers of the Italian madrigal genre. Born in France towards the end of the 15th century, he left his native country early on and spent most of his career in Italy. His first publications, two books of four-part madrigals, appeared in Venice in 1533 and 1534. Both collections were reprinted several times, and in 1540 a combined volume appeared: "Di Verdelotto / tutti li madrigali del primo et del secondo libro a quatro voci." This publication became one of the most popular collections of its time and was reprinted 11 times (!) over the course of 25 years. The concert program focuses on pieces from this collection. Beyond their sheer beauty, Verdelot's madrigals laid the foundation for the concept of word painting and, even more so, for the Italian madrigal as a genre. The text, set to harmony for four voices, is through-composed, unlike, for example, the earlier frottola; that is, each line of text receives its own unique musical setting. Today, Verdelot's madrigals are often performed in their contemporary version for solo voice and lute accompaniment, published three years after the first edition by Adrian Willaert. However, the concert will feature the original four-voice versions of these madrigals.
Tickets are CHF 41.80-57.20.
