A scenic drive up the southern Black Forest on a crisp autumn day can only be topped with a stop in the town of Lahr during their Chrysanthemum Festival, “Chrysanthema.” For two weeks, this idyllic little town lined with half-timbered houses will attract over 300,000 visitors to witness a sea of bright yellow, deep red, blazing purple, and intense orange. You can walk through the city center to discover the 10,000 chrysanthemums arranged in fascinating flower beds, artistic flower wagons, and lush house decorations with unusual cascading chrysanthemums. The chrysanthemum is deeply rooted in the city’s history, and the local businesses adorn their facades and shops. The Lahr gastronomy serves tasty chrysanthemum dishes, and local clubs actively participate in the events and in the production of the flower wagons. Creative minds create high-quality chrysanthemum products, such as chrysanthemum oil; chrysanthemum soap; and truffles, beer, and liqueur with chrysanthemums. A varied cultural and musical program is offered from Monday to Sunday on the Marktplatz, as well as an unforgettable guided tour of the city and its historical center. Lahr is located approximately 75 minutes from Basel and can be reached by car or by train from Basel’s Badischer Bahnhof.
There is no admission fee.
