“The Last Waltz” is the legendary farewell concert by The Band that featured numerous high-profile guests and was recorded at Winterland in San Francisco in 1976. Besides its release on three LPs, the concert became particularly well-known thanks to the concert film by renowned American film director Martin Scorsese. Even after decades, The Band's music has lost none of its greatness. The songs of these amazing musicians are still being played today. They are practically the epitome of what is known as roots music. The film Scorsese shot at their farewell concert is still considered one of the greatest concert films of all time, even some 50 years later. The musicians of The Band and their many guests simply delivered a concert destined for eternity. The stars who performed at this roughly five-hour concert read like a who's who of the international music scene of the time: Muddy Waters, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Dr. John, Ringo Starr, Stephen Stills, Emmylou Harris, and many more.
For this Groove Now concert, Victor Wainwright, a roots musician and multiple Blues Music Award winner, has immersed himself in the music of “The Last Waltz” and will interpret it with his band and guests. The setlist includes world hits such as "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "Up on Cripple Creek." “The Last Waltz” project, which can only be seen in the USA, will be presented at the Groove Now Blues Weeks Basel. Look forward to a concert that, while not quite five hours long, will likely never be experienced in this form again.
Tickets are CHF 75.
