Everybody has seen the yellow hiking trail markers in Switzerland. But hardly anyone wonders who is responsible for them. The marked Swiss hiking trail network is around 65,000 km, which is about 1.5 times the circumference of the earth. Behind this professional service is a great deal of volunteer work done in cantonal organizations, supported by the umbrella organization “Schweizer Wanderwege.” In the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basellandschaft, the “Wanderwege beider Basel” association is responsible for these tasks. About 50 volunteers also offer other services for hikers, such as guided hikes in various parts of Switzerland as well as in Alsace and the Black Forest, including some in English.
This season, there will be five guided hiking tours in English. Your experienced hiking guide, Hanspeter Preiswerk, who has worked in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry for many years, will be leading these free hikes.
On this day, the hike will take you from Benkerjoch to Herznach in canton Aargau. Starting from the Benkerjoch, a largely unknown pass from Frick to Aarau, you will climb the canton’s highest mountain. The relaxing descent through the bracing forest opens the views onto the rolling hills of the Fricktal. Interestingly, just before Herznach, you will come along an ancient mining pit. The remaining installations remind of a more glorious time in the past.
You should bring your own food and drink, hiking boots and suitable clothing for the weather, and your U-Abo or individually purchased train ticket. Detailed instructions will be sent to all registered participants a few days before the hike.
Meeting place is at the Basel SBB at 9:30 at the IR 36 to Zürich, with the outgoing journey at 9:37 (via Rheinfelden – Frick – Bus) arriving at Benkerjoch, Passhöhe at 10:26. The return journey will be from Herznach Post (Bus via Frick – Rheinfelden) departing at 15:00 and arriving in Basel at 15:48.
