Everybody has seen the yellow hiking trail markers in Switzerland. But hardly anyone wonders who is responsible for them. The marked Swiss hiking trail network is around 65,000 km, which is about 1.5 times the circumference of the earth. Behind this professional service is a great deal of volunteer work done in cantonal organizations, supported by the umbrella organization “Schweizer Wanderwege.” In the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basellandschaft, the “Wanderwege beider Basel” association is responsible for these tasks. About 50 volunteers also offer other services for hikers, such as guided hikes in various parts of Switzerland as well as in Alsace and the Black Forest, including some in English.
This season, there will be five guided hiking tours in English. Your experienced hiking guide, Hanspeter Preiswerk, who has worked in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry for many years, will be leading these free hikes.
On this day, the hike will take you from Nunningen to Beinwil/SO. The hike starts with a strenuous slope to the Riedberg. The small chapel on the top, dedicated to Saint Wendelin, may compensate for the efforts. The route traverses the meadows of the Nunningenberg and leads along the Zinglenberg. You then head down to the cloister of Beinwil where you might take a glimpse on the monastic life and the beautiful gardens. The setting of the cloister is unmatched.
You should bring your own food and drink, hiking boots and suitable clothing for the weather, and your U-Abo or individually purchased train ticket.
Meeting place is at the Basel SBB at 9:20 at the S3 to Olten, with the outgoing journey at 9:31 (S3 via Liestal B111) arriving at Nunningen, Post at 10:24. The return journey from Beinwil Kloster (B115 via Zwingen S3) will depart at 14:59 and arrive at the Basel SBB at 15:51.
Participation is free and limited to around 30 participants; register directly with your guide at 079 395 9758 or hanspeter.preiswerk@teleport.ch by October 15.
