As a pioneering artist of abstract expressionism, Helen Frankenthaler (1928–2011) occupies a central position in postwar American art. With her soak-stain technique, she revolutionized abstract painting and provided the crucial impetus for the development of color field painting in the United States from the mid-1950s onward. A particular focus of the exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Basel is her intensive engagement with historic art that she admired and which inspired many works throughout her career—a dialogue that permeates her entire oeuvre. Thus, for the first time, Frankenthaler’s paintings will be shown in conversation with artworks ranging from the 15th to the 20th century, a juxtaposition that enriches understanding of her abstract art
At the age of just 23, Frankenthaler revolutionized modern painting with her innovative soak-stain technique. Using diluted paint, she created compositions of tremendous luminosity on unprimed canvases laid on the floor—often in large or even monumental formats. She manipulated the paint from all sides with sponges, scrapers, household brushes, and other tools. This caused the canvas to absorb the pigments, producing unique effects as the fabric and paint became one. Although Frankenthaler allowed chance considerable influence in her painting process, she maintained a keen awareness of balance and structure. Her works captivate with their lyrical use of color and bold compositional choices. Frankenthaler continuously developed her painting style throughout her long career, and in addition to unique paintings on canvas and paper, she also created a number of prints. Yet she always returned to the soak-stain technique..
More than 50 works spanning six decades are presented in Kunstmuseum Basel’s special exhibition "Helen Frankenthaler" and offer an impressive insight into the oeuvre of one of the most important artists of American abstraction. This comprehensive retrospective is the largest exhibition of her paintings to date in Europe and her first institutional solo exhibition in Switzerland.
