Inspect the Decks — Hip Hop Culture Festival
On this weekend, Basel's first hip-hop culture festival “Inspect the Decks” will take place in the Klybeck harbor area. The event bears this name for good reason, as the entire supporting program will take place on the deck of the MS Evolutie—Basel's art and culture freighter (https://www.ms-evolutie.ch/). The ship, which is currently moored below the landing stage at Holzpark Klybeck, used to transport goods from all over Europe to Basel. In 2015, it was finally converted into an art and culture freighter that hosts a variety of events. On this weekend, various disciplines of hip-hop culture come together on the Rhein. It's all about exchange, including with younger people, and a shared enthusiasm for hip-hop culture itself.
The ship will be sprayed in advance by graffiti artists from all over Switzerland. On the morning of August 3, the mobile work of art will be presented to the public for the first time on its maiden voyage. The two-day festival will then begin in the afternoon, inviting art lovers, families, and children to look around, exchange ideas, and get involved. For example, you can learn to draw your first "outlines" under the guidance of professionals and ask the artists everything you ever wanted to know about spraying; practice break-dance moves; or perform your rhymes and beats at an open mic. Of course, you can also just admire the beautiful ship and chat a little with insiders—it will definitely be exciting!
The highlight of the event is undoubtedly the ship designed by the artists, which can be visited and admired on this occasion. The joint graffiti work is dedicated to sustainability, in line with Basel's climate goals.
This event is free.
