The symphonies and arias of Kammerorchester Basel’s 24th project of their Haydn2032's cycle, entitled “Haydn in Love,” are all more or less closely connected to three women who were in regular correspondence with Joseph Haydn (who had been living in London since 1791) or who had an almost intimate relationship with him: Maria Anna von Genzinger, Luigia Polzelli, and Rebecca Schroeter. For example, it was Haydn's initial plan to dedicate his first symphonies written in London, foremost among them Symphony No. 96 in D major, to von Grenzinger, and he confessed to Polzelli that when composing the cavatina to be sung by Euridice as she dies in his new opera “L'anima del filosofo” written for London, he had actually only thought of her. Symphony No. 97 in C major, a work brimming with joie de vivre, ultimately presents the audience with a noticeably enamored 60-year-old who could now be certain that he had finally found the long-awaited lady of his heart. These two symphonies are accompanied by Haydn’s most beautiful soprano arias, performed by soloist Nikola Hillebrand.
Tickets are CHF 95 and CHF 48 for youths and students.
