This concert with the Kammerorchester Basel features music by an exiled Russian who wrote music of longing inspired by his homeland; a Russian who stayed home and wrote the sweetest soul music; and a Hungarian who conjured the power of rhythm.
When Sergei Prokofiev left his homeland in 1918, hoping for a great career in America, he was disappointed: no one was waiting for him there. He was all the more delighted, then, to reunite with a Jewish ensemble of friends, for whom he immediately and with great enthusiasm composed an overture that, wonderfully, was quite successful. His compatriot and colleague Dmitri Shostakovich, on the other hand, remained in Russia and became a pawn in the game of party politics, sometimes courted, sometimes ostracized. But he outlived his arch-enemy Stalin and then wrote an effective, emotional, and highly romantic piano concerto for his beloved son Maxim. Also on the program is a string quartet by Shostakovich that his conductor friend Rudolf Barshai skillfully transformed into a chamber symphony, expanding its sonic possibilities.
György Ligeti, like his compatriot Béla Bartók, collected Eastern European folk melodies and incorporated them into his own music. This is how the vibrant "Concert Românesc," an apotheosis of joy, came about.
