This program is dedicated to an unusual piano trio: oboe, bassoon, and piano. Few composers have originally written for this instrumentation, which opens up new sonic possibilities through arrangements and transcriptions. Right at the beginning of the program, the two wind instruments meld into a sonic unit in an arrangement of Joseph Haydn's Piano Trio, while the piano moves between accompaniment and brilliant lead. Haydn's Trio is followed by Robert Schumann's “Three Romances,” one of the few original works for the oboe from the 19th century and a gem of intimate lyricism and poetic depth. The work became so popular that other instrumentalists quickly took a liking to it and adapted the Romances for their own instruments. In André Jolivet’s Sonatina for Oboe and Bassoon, which he wrote around 100 years later, the sounds of French modernism are so individual that an adaptation is difficult to imagine: Jolivet combines rhythmic energy with archaic-sounding lines in a clear musical language. Oboe and bassoon engage in an intense musical dialogue full of surprises and subtle irony, as two equal partners who freely develop their respective colors and characters. In stark contrast is Mikhail Glinka's Trio Pathétique: "I know love only through the unhappiness it causes," the composer wrote in the score. Originally composed for clarinet, bassoon, and piano, the work is now frequently performed with oboe, and in this combination it unfolds a particularly shimmering, lyrical expression. Glinka, the founder of Russian national music, unites Italian cantabile and dramatic gestures with romantic melancholy in this four-movement work.
The concert evening thus spans a wide range from classical elegance to romantic intimacy, and French modernism, all the way to the passionate expression of early Russian Romanticism. And time and again, it demonstrates just how versatile and richly colored the unusual combination of oboe, bassoon, and piano can be.
