Lady Sings the Blues

Billie Holiday was one of the greatest singers in jazz and blues. Her life was full of contradictions. Her musicians were "kissed and slapped" by Billie Holiday, and the audience loved and hated her at the same time. Brothel – drugs – prison – Carnegie Hall – and prison again—hese were typical stations for a woman who dreamed of owning a home for stray dogs and orphans, where she wanted to teach her charges how to be happy being who they are.
The musical theater piece "Billie Holiday—Lady Sings the Blues" by Ulrich Greb is based on Holiday's autobiography of the same name. The piece is set in a music club in the United States in the 1930s. It revisits the most important stages and events in her life, but also plays with her idiosyncratic personality, her not particularly strong connection to the truth, and explores the many facets of her ambivalent appearance. The piece includes music by Holiday, such as "Lover Man," "Don't Explain," and "Billie's Blues."
Anne Ehmke, born in 1962, has been working as a singer, musician, composer, and actress for 40 years. The artist, who is rooted in the region, not only has an expressive voice, but also has a great passion for the theater. On this evening, she will be performing songs and memories by Holiday, accompanied by Hary de Ville (guitar, harp, vocals) and Dominic Schürmann (bass).
