The exhibition “Shifting Grounds” brings together the work of Swiss artists Martina Böttiger (Basel) and Laura Badertscher (Zürich), whose practices explore how perception, space, and the body are shaped by cultural, social, and material codes.
Böttiger creates three-dimensional ceramic works that shift between installation-based and applied approaches, entering into a direct dialog with architectural space. Her practice investigates how built environments structure perception and which esthetic and social codes influence the way we experience them.
Badertscher works figuratively in painting, examining the human body as a field of tension between beauty, strangeness, and cultural representation. Drawing from sources in art history, media, and everyday imagery, she reflects on how visual habits and icons shape our ways of seeing. Her works combine iconic and banal image worlds, creating a visual language that is playful, seductive, and unsettling at once.
Together, Böttiger and Badertscher invite viewers to reflect on the subtle codes that shape our experience of space, objects, and bodies, revealing the interplay between materiality, perception, and cultural context.
