Miles Davis–John Coltrane Centennial

Trumpeter Miles Davis and saxophonist John Coltrane were outstanding, style-defining soloists and bandleaders in jazz history. Coltrane was a member of the Miles Davis Quintet/Sextet from 1955-1960, when many classic jazz albums were recorded, including "Kind of Blue" and "'Round About Midnight." In 1960, they went their separate ways, but achieved further great success with their respective bands: Davis in a wide variety of configurations and styles, and Coltrane primarily with his own famous quartet featuring McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones, which recorded groundbreaking albums such as "A Love Supreme." Their compositions are part of the absolute standard jazz repertoire; titles like "So What" (Davis) and "Giant Steps" (Coltrane) are well known to every musician and fan. Both of these two jazz icons would have celebrated their 100th birthday in 2026—reason enough to dedicate a special quintet program to these giants with proven experts in this music.
American trumpeter Freddie Hendrix has been one of the world's leading trumpeters and jazz educators for two decades. He worked with the Count Basie Orchestra, Christian McBride, Vincent Herring, as well as Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and Alicia Keys. He is a powerful, melodic soloist and is considered a legitimate successor to the great hard bop trumpeters.
Kirk MacDonald, who has established himself as Canada's leading saxophonist, has received numerous awards throughout his career. He has contributed to over 50 CDs as a leader and sideman; participated in numerous national radio recordings; and worked with leading jazz musicians worldwide, including Sam Noto, Kenny Wheeler, Eddie Henderson, and many more.
