In Arnold Schönberg’s opera, Moses is chosen to convey the idea of God to his people. But how can something unimaginable be conveyed without images or concepts? While the people dance around the golden calf, Moses’s alternative model lies in a desert existence: in an empty space devoid of symbols, where one is left to one’s own devices. The upheavals of the 1920s shaped Schönberg’s seminal twelve-tone work and culminated in a moving plea for coexistence without enemy stereotypes. It is now being staged as a cross-border collaboration between the theaters of Basel and Freiburg (D). Theater legend Walter Hess takes on the role of Moses. The parable is explored further through a program of discussions and accompanying events in collaboration with the Universities of Basel and Freiburg, the Jewish Museum of Switzerland, the Mizmorim Chamber Music Festival, the Stadtkino Basel, and the Kommunales Kino Freiburg.
The opera will be performed in German with German and English surtitles.
