Beethoven titled most of the 10 sonatas he dedicated to the violin "Sonatas for Piano and Violin Accompaniment." This designation is misleading: the violin by no means plays a subordinate role as an accompanying instrument. The program on this evening with violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja and pianist Joonas Ahonen features two of these sonatas. Two works from Igor Stravinsky's neoclassical period are also included, his “Suite Italienne” and “Duo concertant.” In this program, Kopatchinskaja and Ahonen engage in a constant musical dialogue—sounding as one.
