In 1847, Franz Liszt did something unique: at the height of his fame as a piano virtuoso, he abruptly ended his concert career and never resumed it. How did this come about? As a virtuoso, Liszt had revolutionized piano playing and developed a perfect technique. It gave him complete freedom on the keys. But he was tired of the associated virtuoso spectacle in concert halls with its endless stream of the same bravura pieces. He yearned for depth. With the technical freedom of piano playing, he wanted to seek the "spiritual" in music. He himself cited the late works of Ludwig van Beethoven as his central inspiration. He admired their transcendence. The compositions Liszt subsequently wrote truly reflect a new era in piano music.
In his concert, Swiss pianist Bernhard Ruchti traces this development. Around Ludwig van Beethoven's wonderful Sonata in E major, op. 109, he will perform a charming work by Sigismund Thalberg from the virtuoso period, as well as Franz Liszt's rarely played First Hungarian Rhapsody.
Tickets are CHF 30 for adults and CHF 20 for youths and students.
