Sinfonieorchester Basel — Sehnsucht (Longing)

Stadtcasino Basel
Wed 14.10. | Thu 15.10.
19:30

Sinfonieorchester Basel’s program on this evening presents music from poetic to gloomy. The waltz stands for an ideal world. At least on the surface, because when Maurice Ravel says “Everything waltz!,” the dance soon turns towards the abyss and even beyond. His piece “La Valse” pays tribute to an entire world, that of the Habsburg Empire, of old Europe, with a perhaps wistful look back. Robert Schumann's piano concerto is music of subtle nuances, full of poetry, and speaks romantically of longing. It is ideal for the exceptional Polish-Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki, the soloist on this evening. Schumann's concerto is embedded in two works of recent modernism: Kaija Saariaho's view of the starry sky “Ciel d’hiver” and the enchanted soundscape of George Crumb's “A Haunted Landscape”. Finally, a commissioned composition by Polish composer Anna Sowa "μ-Cephei" will be premiered on this evening. It is the first piece in the new series “Bonus Tracks” initiated by the Sinfonieorchester Basel.
Tickets are CHF 35-110; half price for youths and students.
