“Twenty captains of industry are flying overhead and millions are starving down below.” Kasimir, who has lost his job as a chauffeur that morning, looks after the zeppelin in displeasure, while Karoline wants to have fun at the Oktoberfest. They have “simply become too heavy for each other.” Karoline wants to break out of her damned milieu and tries it out that evening with other men. In 17 scenes, Ödön von Horváth describes the drifting apart of a young couple and how they hurt each other. Von Horváth is a master of condensation and writes sentences that are as exhilarating as they are uncertain. For the first time, Karin Henkel will be directing the production on the main stage at Theater Basel. This ballad full of quiet sadness with humor will be performed in German with English surtitles.
Tickets are CHF 30-115 for adults and CHF 20 for youths and students.
