For 13 days this summer, Basel will once again be transformed into an international center of theater and dance, packed with new forms of theater, experimental performances, musical theater, Nouveau Cirque, and much more. Eleven productions, 10 short plays, a festival LAB for young artists, as well as concerts, artist talks, panels and workshops will be staged at Kaserne Basel, ROXY Birsfelden, Theater Basel (Schauspielhaus and Kleine Bühne), junges theater basel, Neues Theater Dornach, Vorstadttheater Basel at Oekolampad, and Kunstmuseum Basel. The heart of the festival is the Kasernenareal, where the festival center is more than just a bar. Like an Italian sagra, the festival center will become a place where, between polenta and salsicca, strings of light bulbs, Italopop, and Monoblock, the simplicity of a cozy get-together will be celebrated. All theater-goers, artists, and neighbors are welcome to join the artists and festival staff to eat, drink, discuss, dance, immerse themselves in the program with the introductions, leave their own thoughts, and simply let the summer evenings come to a cozy end.
The program is complemented by a jointly organized “Super Saturday” in cooperation with the Kunsttage Basel and the Kunstmuseum Basel. As part of the festival, several of the invited artists will be giving workshops for all interested parties and masterclasses for professional dance makers (registration necessary).
Move yourself before the dance! That's the motto of their warm-up on August 21 at 18:00. The aim is to dive into Alice Ripoll's world of movement not only with your head but also with your body. Don't forget your towel! Admission is free and there is no prior knowledge required and no age limit at this English-language event. Meeting point will be at the Foyer of the Schauspielhaus, Theater Basel; registration via vermittlung@theaterfestival.ch.
During the festival, the Kasernenhof will be transformed into a skate paradise. In keeping with Mette Ingvartsen's play “Skatepark,” you can skate outside in the sun on temporary mini-ramps, rails, and wallrides to your heart's content. A best trick contest will take place there on August 31 at 20:30.
There will also be childcare facilities to enable young parents to discover the international theater world without children over the weekend.
Check their website for details on the programs, locations, times, and ticket prices. Under the motto “Pay what you can,” the festival invites the audience to choose from three price categories. Advance tickets are now available on the Theaterfestival website. Note that the organizers ensure that all productions are understandable for English-speaking audiences.
