Tour — Steve McQueen: Bass

Schaulager
13:00-13:45

The Laurenz Foundation, Schaulager Basel is pleased to announce “Bass” (2024), one of the most recent works created by Steve McQueen. The world-renowned artist and Academy Award-winning filmmaker is returning to Schaulager with his most abstract work to date, 12 years after his previous groundbreaking exhibition here. Specifically attuned to the architecture of Schaulager, “Bass” is largely inspired by McQueen’s keen interest in the effects of light, color, and sound on our physical perception of space and time. “What I love about light and sound is that they are both created through movement and fluidity. They can be molded into any shape, like vapor or a scent; they can sneak into any nook and cranny. I also love the beginning point where something isn’t a form as much as it is all-encompassing,” he said.
McQueen was born in London in 1969. Surveys of his work have been held at numerous institutions, and he has participated in several editions of the Documenta and the Venice Biennale. He is the recipient of numerous awards. As a filmmaker, McQueen has directed the feature films "Hunger" (2008); "Shame" (2011); "12 Years a Slave" (2014), for which he received an Academy Award; and "Widows" (2018). He also directed the series "Small Axe" (2020), an anthology of five films shown on BBC and Amazon, and "Uprising" (2021), a three-part documentary series made in collaboration with James Rogan for BBC. His latest documentary "Occupied City" (2023) is based on the book "Atlas of an Occupied City, Amsterdam 1940–56" by Bianca Stigter.
On this afternoon, a tour of the exhibit “Bass” will be given in English. After an introduction to the complex, multilayered themes resonating within “Bass,” participants will immerse themselves in this evocative work of sound and colored light. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to reflect on your impressions and discuss the questions raised by the piece.
The tour is included in the admission price; no booking required.
