Treasure Day at Historisches Museum Basel

The Historisches Museum Basel (Historical Museum) at Barfüsserkirche is currently hosting a special exhibition entitled “Treasure Hoards,” which traces the 25 most spectacular treasure hoards ever found in the Basel region. On display are Celtic gold jewelry that once adorned huge statues of gods; one of the largest Roman silver treasures in Europe, discovered in Kaiseraugst; or the loot of a master thief sunk in the Rhein. The treasures on display date from the Bronze Age to the present day and come from northwestern Switzerland, Alsace, and southern Baden.
On this day, the museum invites you to a “Treasure Day” when a diverse program awaits the whole family: you can mint coins, piece together broken vessels, or create your own piece of jewelry based on antique designs. There will also be experts on hand who will provide appraisals for any object you may have found on a walk in the region or while digging in your garden. Short guided tours will enchant participants: you can hear about magical treasure hunts, learn more about treasure hunting with a metal detector, or marvel at the mystery surrounding the silver treasure of Kaiseraugst. Children can embark on a treasure hunt with their parents or immerse themselves in the world of legends with Count Dagobert.
