The annual wine festival in Freiburg, Germany, is the largest and most important one in the Southern Black Forest region. For this festival, the center of the beautiful old town of Freiburg is turned into a giant festival ground, with stalls representing different wineries and wine cooperatives from the region lining the squares and surrounding the town’s picturesque cathedral. You can also get to know the Baden cuisine with gastronomy that is sure to compliment the wine lists; you can download the festival flyer to help you select specific wineries and restaurateurs to visit.
Freiburg can be reached by car in about 1 hour from Basel; there are a number of parking garages in the city, although they tend to be very full on such occasions. Especially if you plan on tasting several wines and want to avoid drinking and driving, Freiburg can also easily be reached by train from Basel Badischer Bahnhof to Freiburg (Breisgau) Hauptbahnhof (40 minutes), followed by a 15-minute walk to the festival grounds or a short ride in a bicycle-taxi.
There is no admission charge for the wine festival. You can bring your own wine glass or purchase the elegant “Harmonie 35” wine glass for use and as a souvenir for €3 (a portion of the proceeds go to charity and the preservation of the cathedral).
