Get to Know ThanksGiver Schweiz

ThanksGiver Schweiz is a local charity dedicated to reducing the hunger gap as well as fighting food waste. Every week, ThanksGiver saves 40 tons of food (that otherwise would have gone to waste) and feeds over 700 people who are struggling with food insecurity. ThanksGiver has been making a difference in the lives of those in need for more than 3 years, by providing families access to nutritious food and share excess foods to animals and pets. Their work is also good for the environment by reducing the volume of food waste sent to landfill.

Additionally, they have recently launched the ThanksGiver Language Sessions, a community-based program that provides English and German language classes (A1 and A2) to immigrants of all backgrounds. Their program is designed to be affordable and accessible, with small group sizes and practical topics that help learners build real-life language skills.

As the need for food aid in Basel continues to grow, ThanksGiver Schweiz is now attempting to increase their visibility and attract more volunteers and sponsors to help them with their mission. Dedicating time to worthy causes is a pivotal part of Basel life, with around one third of the Swiss population volunteering on a regular basis. You can help by joining this uniquely multilingual group of volunteers and sign up to help out on Wednesdays or Thursdays at one of their foodbank locations. ThanksGiver Schweiz is a great place where expats can get to know their community while improving the lives of hundreds of people that rely on help for food aid.

You can also get involved as a group or company with a sponsorship or by organizing a team event centered around setting up a food bank for an afternoon, distributing food, and learning more about this important community. Don’t have time? You can opt to drop off donations directly at one of their food bank locations. They welcome unopened, dry and canned food donations as well as essential non-food items and pet food! You can also make a tax-deductible financial contribution directly on their website.
