New Contact Point for Reporting Lost or Stolen ID Cards

Lost or stolen ID cards MUST be reported to the police immediately after they are discovered. While you can always register your lost or stolen ID directly at a police station, a Polizeischalter (police counter) is now also available specifically for this purpose in the customer center of the Basel-Stadt Einwohneramt (residents registration office). There, employees of the Basel-Stadt cantonal police accept reports of loss of Swiss identity cards and passports; Swiss residence permits (eg, B- or C-permits); as well as foreign documents such as ID cards, passports, driver’s licenses, and vehicle registration documents. For security reasons, reports of loss must be made in person; online or telephone reports are not possible. Note that the loss of a Swiss driving license or vehicle registration document must still be reported to the motor vehicle inspection office at Clarastrasse 38 in Basel or whichever office is responsible for your community if you live outside of Basel-Stadt.

The police counter at Einwohneramt Basel can be found at the following address:

Kundenzentrum des Einwohneramtes Basel-Stadt
Polizeischalter
Spiegelgasse 6
4001 Basel

Opening hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:00-17:30 and Wednesday from 9:00-18:30.
