New “Fair in Traffic” Campaign
Speeding, ignoring right-of-way rules, and inattentive or tailgating behavior in traffic are not only unfair, but also lead to dangerous situations. However, unfair behavior can also occur and be harmful to others when parking or stopping, as improperly parked vehicles can also cause unpleasant or dangerous situations. E-scooters, bicycles, or cars blocking a sidewalk can force pedestrians to move onto the street. They can also pose a difficult or even insurmountable obstacle for people with visual or mobility impairments. Improperly parked vehicles can also block access to buildings or obstruct the view of traffic, causing hazards to be noticed too late. Especially in shared spaces, improperly parked cars or delivery vans can block spaces that should be available for other uses.
Fairness towards others also is essential at pedestrian crosswalks and sidewalks. Crosswalks are particularly important to ensure the safety of the most vulnerable populations, such as children, older adults, or people with mobility impairment. Sidewalks are reserved for pedestrians and people with regular scooters, but should not be used by people on bikes or e-scooters; the exception are children under age 12 when there is no dedicated bicycle lane.
The new “Fair in Traffic” campaign by canton Basel-Stadt and the cantonal police raises awareness of these issues. Posters, videos, flyers, and campaigns are designed to raise awareness among road users about fair behavior in traffic and when parking their vehicles. The campaign centers on a pink T-Rex, whose boorish demeanor spreads terror on the streets of Basel. The campaign, with a wink, calls on people not to behave like this very prehistoric predator. The campaign also includes the website https://www.basel-unterwegs.ch/events-aktionen/fair-im-verkehr/, which provides an overview of the most important rules. Because fairness in traffic not only promotes better coexistence, but also greater safety for all road users.
