UNESCO World Heritage Days

Every year, on the second weekend of June, the UNESCO World Heritage Sites open their doors and invite you to discover their secrets, their uniqueness, and their extraordinary value. The motto "You only want to protect what you know" aptly summarizes the purpose of the World Heritage Days. It is important that the local population is aware of the significance and value of the World Heritage properties, because only then can they actively campaign for their protection and preservation. Special programs and open doors create the opportunity for people to experience and understand their World Heritage Sites first hand. This 10th edition offers unique insights into Switzerland's diverse natural and cultural treasures and allows views that are otherwise often hidden from visitors. Events such as tours and workshops take place at 10 of Switzerland's World Heritage Sites, including the fortress of Bellinzona; the cities of La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle, famous for watchmaking and town planning; the Old Town of Bern; prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps; the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina area; the Swiss Tectonic Area Sardona; the Jungfrau-Aletsch glacier; the abbey of St. Gallen; the Benedictine Convent of St. John in Müstair; and Monte San Giorgio in Ticino. Most activities are free of charge and aimed at people of all ages, ideal for families, history buffs and the curious. Visitors can expect a wide range of activities, including exclusive guided tours, interactive workshops and cultural performances, all aimed at deepening understanding and appreciation of World Heritage in Switzerland
