Domkonzert — Bach’s “Christmas Oratorio”

In the “Christmas Oratorio,” Johann Sebastian Bach and his librettist comment on the text of the Christmas story recited by an Evangelist, with a well-thought-out arrangement of richly instrumented choirs, arias, recitatives, and chorale verses. The fact that Bach drew on already composed cantatas of homage for the Saxon princely house for the musical realization can be described as a stroke of luck: Not least thanks to the popular tone of these models, the “Christmas Oratorio” became one of the most successful sacred compositions of the Leipzig master.
Spread out over two evenings, all six cantatas of the “Christmas Oratorio” will be performed in Arlesheim Cathedral. On Sunday, January 4, they will perform Cantatas I–III and on Tuesday, January 6, they will perform Cantatas IV-VI.
Performers include Basel Vocal Soloists / Capricornus Consort Basel with conductor Sebastian Goll.
Tickets are CHF 20-75 for each concert evening.
