Antonio Faraò Solo Piano / Emma Rawicz & Gwilym Simcock

Martinskirche
Sunday, 10 May
19:30

On this evening, Jazz Festival Basel will be presenting a double concert evening entitled “Paris-London.”
Antonio Faraò (*1965 in Rome) is one of the crème-de-la-crème of Italian jazz. The expressive and virtuoso pianist has been living in Paris for many years. Faraò studied classical piano with Adriano Della Giustina and completed his training at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan in 1983. He has worked as a sideman with John Abercrombie, Gary Bartz, Billy Cobham, Richard Galliano, Branford Marsalis, and many others. His new, highly acclaimed solo CD was released six months ago in France and has the telling title “Kind of...”. Faraò will present his new work exclusively in Basel.
The duo of saxophonist Emma Rawicz (*2002) and pianist Gwilym Simcock (*1981) brings together two of the most important figures from two generations of British jazz. Rawicz and Simcock, both leaders of their own bands and major projects for big bands and orchestras, love the compact, intimate duo format. “It's a truly joyful experience,” says Simcock, “we harmonize very well together, Emma writes in such an advanced way, her eye for detail is extraordinary.” He admires Rawicz's technical mastery on the tenor and soprano saxophone, especially her ease in the upper registers. Although they come from different generations, there are strong points of contact in their musical history as they even studied with the same teachers at the same colleges. “That's why we have very similar preferences in our understanding of music,” says Rawicz.
Tickets are CHF 29.00-78.90.
