Ballet — Der Nussknacker (The Nutcracker)

In this year's new production, resident choreographer Marco Goecke turns his attention to one of the most famous compositions in the ballet repertoire: Tchaikovsky's “Nussknacker.” But instead of the familiar Christmas idyll, Goecke focuses on the original fairy tale by E.T.A. Hoffmann—a multi-layered story full of fantasy, bizarre characters, and subtle nuances. With his unique signature style, Goecke traces the core of the story and explores the transitions between reality and dream. Toy figures come to life, the magical blurs with the everyday, and you encounter not only Marie and the Nutcracker, but also the deceitful Mouse Queen Mauserinks, the enchanted Princess Pirlipat, and the magical world of the clockmaker Drosselmeier. Basel conductor Thomas Herzog leads the Basel Symphony Orchestra through Tchaikovsky's famous score, revealing previously hidden facets of the colorful music—from the floating lightness of the “Waltz of the Flowers” to the sparkling celesta sounds in the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.” Musical sophistication is combined with narrative depth, and Basel's “Nussknacker” unfolds as a visually stunning, timeless journey into the depths of the imagination.
Tickets are CHF 30-145 and CHF 20 for youths and students.
