Collegium Musicum Basel — Beach and Sea

Under the direction of Principal Guest Conductor Benjamin Reiners, the Collegium Musicum Basel embarks on a musical journey north in this concert—to the coasts, landscapes, and myths of England and Scotland. The guest performer is the renowned mezzo-soprano Tanja Ariane Baumgartner, recently appointed Professor of Vocal Music at the Basel Music Academy.
A trip to Great Britain left a lasting impression on Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Its traces can be found in two of his most famous works: the overture to “The Hebrides” and the Symphony No. 3, the “Scottish Symphony.” Both are beautiful illustrations of natural phenomena and British culture. The American composer Amy Beach also devoted herself to British material: inspired by Mary Queen of Scots, she wrote a work for orchestra and voice. In Edward Elgar's “Sea Pictures,” the British coast takes center stage—the sea sounds sometimes mysteriously shimmering, sometimes powerfully roaring.
Tickets are CHF 49-89.
