The Kammerorchester Basel presents Georg Friedrich Händel’s dramatic cantata “Aci, Galatea e Polifemo, ”which tells the story of the nymph Galatea who is in love with the handsome shepherd boy Acis. And the feeling is mutual. However, Polyphemus, a strong, simple, and both brutish and fascinatingly raw giant, is also drawn to Galatea. He promptly slays his rival with a boulder, but this doesn't win him Galatea. Thanks to Galatea's father, the sea god Nereus, Acis is transformed into a river, into which Galatea can now plunge, thus uniting them forever. The young Händel turns the story into a veritable firework display of music, full of yearning love duets, laments and arias, which explore all musical emotions and are each in a different key.
Tickets are CHF 30-90 for adults, half price for youths and students.
