Connections, links, relationships, ties, interconnections, networks, bonds: “The Stone Alphabet” combines unheard-of stone instruments with seemingly familiar instruments. Special stone instrument prototypes were manufactured in Switzerland for the ensemble, combining innovation, a spirit of experimentation, and experience to create unique music.
The trio consists of composer-performers: interconnected compositional thinking, spontaneous invention, and immediate response form the basis of the musical structures. “The Stone Alphabet” manifests connections to other art forms, to the (partly) moving stone sculptures of Thomas Schütz and the digital visuals of Roberto Mucchiut. Geographically and culturally, “The Stone Alphabet” connects the South with the North in this project: concerts in Ticino and German-speaking Switzerland, participating artists with roots on both sides of the Alps, from whose interior the instruments that are brought to life originate. A musical connection was established years ago between the ensemble and composer Ruedi Häusermann.
