An Evening with Avi Avital & Omer Klein

During the 19th century, the classical mandolin was not particularly popular. In recent years, however, Avi Avital has helped the mandolin regain international renown, reviving its repertoire and making it a fixture in concert life. "I consider it my task to fill the historical gap in mandolin literature so that there will be no shortage of compositions for this instrument in the future," he explains. In his search for his own artistic identity, he broke with tradition. Encounters with other musical styles and genres—from bluegrass and jazz to world music—and projects with his mentor, the great klezmer clarinetist Giora Feidman, paved the way for his development into a mandolin pioneer. Avital's career began in 2007. This was followed by appearances at such prestigious venues around the globe. In 2010, Avital became the first mandolinist ever to be nominated for a Grammy, in the category "Best Instrumental Soloist," for his recording of Avner Dorman's Mandolin Concerto.
Omer Klein is one of Israel's great jazz pianists and composers. His style also includes influences beyond modern jazz, such as the traditional music of his oriental culture. Klein, who grew up in Netanya, began playing the piano at age 7 and wrote his first compositions. As a teenager, he studied jazz at the Thelma Yellin Academy of the Arts and gave his first concerts at the age of 16. In 2005, Klein moved to the United States and quickly became a well-received and respected musician on the local jazz scene, playing at prestigious venues such as the Blue Note and Jazz at Lincoln Center and working with numerous renowned musicians. Since 2006, Klein has recorded 10 albums under his own name, including one entitled “Duet” with bassist Haggai Cohen-Milo and several with the Omer Klein Trio with Cohen-Milo and drummers Ziv Ravitz and Amir Bresler, respectively.
